UPDATED: Man, 25, Sentenced in Shiprock Stabbing

Lukacema Gillie Yazzie, a 25-year-old enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, was sentenced in federal court in Albuquerque Wednesday to 18 months behind bars plus three years of supervised release in connection with a stabbing in Shiprock last December, the U.S. Attorney?s Office said.

Yazzie, who has been in federal custody since his arrest on Dec. 13, 2010, also was ordered to pay $10,008 in restitution to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and $130 to the victim of his assault, federal prosecutors said in a news release.

He pleaded guilty on June 13 to a charge of assault with a dangerous weapon and admitted as part of a plea agreement to stabbing a member of the Mescalero Apache tribe in Shiprock on Dec. 8, 2010, according to the news release.

A 24-year-old Navajo man accused of stabbing a man last year in Shiprock has pleaded guilty in federal court in Albuquerque to an assault with a dangerous weapon charge under a plea agreement with the U.S. Attorney?s Office.

Lukacema Gillie Yazzie, under the terms of the plea agreement, will be sentenced to 18 months in prison followed by not more than five years of supervised release, the U.S. Attorney?s Office said in a news release announcing that Yazzie had entered the guilty plea Monday.

A date for a sentencing hearing was not immediately set for Yazzie, who has been in federal custody since his arrest on Dec. 13, 2010, and will remain in custody pending the sentencing hearing, according to the news release.

The news release said Yazzie pleaded guilty to stabbing a member of the Mescalero Apache Nation on Dec. 8, 2010, in Shiprock, which is on the Navajo reservation.

Yazzie was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon in a criminal complaint on Dec. 13, 2010, and was indicted on the same charge on Dec. 28, 2010. He admitted in his plea agreement that he committed the assault charged in the indictment, the news release said.
