ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - Members of the Young Democrats of America will be gathering in Albuquerque this week for the group's quarterly national meeting.

Organizers say the group chose New Mexico for the meeting because of the state's importance in the 2012 elections.

The state's voters supported President Barack Obama over Republican Sen. John McCain by a nearly 58 percent to 42 percent margin in the 2008 election.

Rep. Ben Lujan, D-NM, will be the keynote speaker for the event. Lujan is a past member and the group says he mentors young Democrats across New Mexico.

The meeting starts Friday and will focus on strategic planning and preparations for the 2012 campaigns and Democratic National Convention.
