An attorney for former NBA and Georgia Tech basketball star Javaris Crittenton said his client was not the trigger man in a shooting that left the mother of four children dead on an Atlanta street. Crittenton has been charged with homicide murder, felony murder and aggravated intent to murder in the death of Julian Jones on August 19.Crittenton was returned to Atlanta to face the charges after being held for two weeks in Los Angeles.
"Mr. Crittenton uncategorically had nothing to do with the events of Aug. 19," attorney Brian Steel told reporters.
Crittenton waived his first court appearance in the case and Steel explained why to the judge.
An Innocent Man in Jail?
"The hearing today is irrelevant to us, and I am not belittling the court," he said. "It is unthinkable that an innocent man is in jail, and it forces him to fight for his life."
On the night of Aug. 19, Jones was walking near her southwest Atlanta home with a group that included a male teenager who Crittenton believed robbed him of a diamond watch, diamond necklace and an iPhone in April 2011, according to police.
Investigators believe that Jones was killed by bullets intended for the teen. Witnesses told police that the shot were fired from a black Chevrolet Tahoe that was linked to Crittenton.
Crittenton has denied the charges, saying in a social media post that the accusation was "crazy."
