Attorney spends another day on the witness stand

By ALEXANDER BRUZUAL Saturday, June 18 2011

For a second day, attorney Nyree Alphonso went into the witness box of the Port-of-Spain High Court?s Criminal Court, to testify in the ongoing trial of her husband ? Chaguanas businessman Towfeek Ali.

Ali, owner of the Firearm Training Institute, is before Justice Hayden St Clair Douglas, and is charged for being in illegal possession of two firearms. Police claimed the illegal guns were found in Ali?s right, front pants pocket.

Continuing her recollection of the events of December 13, 2004, which led to the charges against her husband, Alphonso reiterated that she was yelled at by ASP Chandrabhan Maharaj when the officers searched her vehicle.

She said that night the plainclothes policeman told her to get out her car, and that ?we is the police, and we can do anything.? While she acknowledged to the court that this was not in her police statements, she maintained that ASP Maharaj had said the words.

Despite this, Alphonso said she kept her cool throughout the alleged ?alarming and shocking? conduct of the ASP.

?It might have been that the police were attempting to intimidate me. But I did not budge. I felt as though I was exercising my rights as a law abiding citizen, because I knew that there were no guns or ammunition in the car as the officer had claimed,? Alphonso noted.

Renuka Rambajhan is Prosecuting while Pamela Elder, SC, leads the defence.

The matter is expected to resume on Tuesday.
