OLYMPIA, Wash. ?

Washington Attorney General Rob McKenna says now is the time for states to lead a battle against human trafficking.

McKenna announced a national initiative Thursday morning in Chicago, where he was installed as president of the National Association of Attorneys General. McKenna says increased awareness about human trafficking has reached a tipping point, and that attorneys general are in a strong position to take on the issue.

A report compiled by the U.S. State Department found that 12.3 million adults and children are in forced labor, bonded labor and forced prostitution around the world. McKenna says it's not just an international problem but a local one.

McKenna previously served in a variety of leadership roles in the attorneys general association. He recently launched a bid for governor in Washington state.
