Charles deputy county attorney to leave post - So Md News.com

Charles County Deputy County Attorney Sue Greer is leaving her job to join her husband?s law firm before his impending military deployment to Afghanistan.

Greer?s resignation is effective June 30, after which she will join the Law Offices of William R. Greer Jr. in La Plata, Greer said Wednesday.

Greer?s work for county government began in 1990, when she was the first law clerk to then-state?s attorney Leonard C. Collins Jr., she said. After 1991, she left to join the U.S. Department of Justice, where she was stationed in Kansas City, Mo., with the Bureau of Prisons.

?Len Collins called me up and wanted me to come back to the county and I did, as an attorney for him. In 1995, the county hired me as the first counsel to the sheriff?s office,? Greer said, where she stayed for almost 10 years.

In mid to late 2003 she joined the Office of the County Attorney. In 2006, she was promoted to deputy county attorney.

A year from now, when her husband is slated to return from his tour as a member of the U.S. Army National Guard, she might seek to return to county government, Greer said.

?I think there?s always a chance. I?ve told the commissioners I may darken their doorstep again in a year. I?ve been a public servant and I enjoy being a public servant, I enjoy doing things for the citizens of the county,? she said.

As for William Greer?s deployment and the shift in her own career, ?We just view it as his duty. When you have that duty, you just have to make that decision,? she said. ?Professionally it was a very difficult decision, but personally it was a very easy decision. He was called to serve our country, and it is our country. It?s a good lesson in duty and sacrifice for my children and I?m proud they have the opportunity to learn that lesson. I?m proud of him for what he?s about to take part in.?

Commissioner Ken Robinson (D) said Greer?s service will be sorely missed by county officials.

?It was a surprise and obviously family trumps all. And so this is definitely a family decision. In the six months I?ve been in county government I have found Sue to be a pleasure to work with and will miss her,? Robinson said.

After Greer?s departure, the county attorney?s office will have two lawyers; fully staffed, it would have five, Robinson said. Assistant County Attorney John Buchanan retired in early May, and longtime County Attorney Roger Fink departed weeks later.

The county is seeking to fill all three vacant positions as quickly as possible, Robinson said.

?Sue, as the deputy county attorney, has kept the office up to date and up to speed. We don?t anticipate any issues with the transition,? he said.

?Ms. Greer?s departure is a profound loss to the county,? Charles County cCommissioners? President Candice Quinn Kelly (D) said in a county news release Wednesday. ?She has worked tirelessly to serve the residents of Charles County. We appreciate her dedication, her sound counsel and her adherence to the highest standards of legal and ethical practice.?

As deputy county attorney, Greer advised the Charles County Planning Commission.
