THE ATTORNEYS

Lorna Graham

Assistant U.S. attorney, Middle District of Pennsylvania, Scranton.

An assistant U.S. attorney since 1988, Ms. Graham practiced law in New York City with Pollner, Mezan; Kaufman Malchman & Kirby and Shebar, Pomerantz & Slotnick. From 1981 to 1985, she served as an assistant district attorney in Nassau County, N.Y., after earning a bachelor's degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, a law degree from the University of Bridgeport School of Law and a Master of Laws degree from New York University School of Law.

Bruce D. Brandler

Senior litigation counsel, assistant U.S. attorney, Middle District of Pennsylvania. Known for his aggressive style and poignant questioning, Mr. Brandler, who specializes in financial crime and fraud cases, was the lead prosecutor in the case against the former chief financial officer of Leslie Fay, the Wilkes-Barre-area company that once was one of the largest clothing manufacturing companies in the country. The CEO was convicted of altering the company's books and leading to its downfall.

Mr. Brandler transferred out of the Scranton office to Harrisburg more than a decade ago.

William S. Houser

Assistant U.S. attorney, Middle District of Pennsylvania. A former Lackawanna County assistant district attorney, Mr. Houser is experienced in prosecuting sophisticated white-collar crimes, most recently in the trial of former Luzerne County Judge Mark Ciavarella. An avid runner, he is quiet, low-key, but known for his meticulous preparation and is never caught flat-footed.

William C. Costopoulos

A flamboyant lawyer from Lemoyne, Cumberland County, near Harrisburg, who represents Mr. Cordaro. Mr. Costopoulos, one of the state's most prominent defense lawyers, has defended other high-profile cases in Lackawanna County. He helped clear former Lackawanna County Judge Frank Eagen in 1999 of all but one crime: obstruction of justice.

In another high-profile case on the other side of the state, Mr. Costopoulos represented Sen. Jane Orie, a powerful Allegheny County Republican, at her public corruption trial on charges she used staffers to conduct political campaigns for herself and her sister, state Supreme Court Justice Joan Orie Melvin.

Mr. Costopoulos argued the charges were a political vendetta by a district attorney out to demonize her.

Chris Powell

A Scranton lawyer from one of the oldest law firms in the city, who represents Mr. Munchak. Mr. Powell comes from a family of lawyers. His father was a well-known, high-profile criminal defense attorney with a flair for dramatics. Mr. Powell said his father taught him how to "command a courtroom." A graduate of Villanova University, he earned his law degree from Loyola University. A private pilot, he likes to spend time flying his single-engine Cessna 182.
