Wolf Runs for 101 Yards, Gets 3 TDs
There are four one-loss football teams in Class 5A. Of that group, the one drawing the least amount of attention, ironically enough, might be the La Cueva Bears.
With each passing week, the 7-1 Bears appear more comfortable and at ease under first-year head coach Ed Lucero ? and Thursday night at Wilson Stadium, the Sandia Matadors got their usual front-row seat .
La Cueva?s offense pieced together what was probably its most efficient night of the 2011 season, gaining nearly 500 yards as the sixth-ranked Bears belted the 10th-ranked Matadors 41-18 in a District 2-5A opener.
?We still haven?t reached our full potential,? a visibly pleased Lucero said, ?but we?re improving every week.?
La Cueva quarterback Michael Walsh threw for 157 yards and two scores, and the Bears also gained nearly 300 yards on the ground.
Tyler Wolf had 10 carries for 101 yards and two touchdowns, and he also caught one of Walsh?s TD passes.
?I think he?s their best football player, defensively and offensively,? Sandia coach Kevin Barker said of Wolf.
Kamron McKnight, who returned to the La Cueva lineup last week, added another 95 yards on seven carries. Both Wolf and McKnight scored on 61-yard runs.
The Bears even got their mammoth tight ends involved. Justin Griego (6-feet-8) and the 6-5 Calvin Allen both caught TD passes ? the first of the season for each.
?We just wanted to establish our running game first and let our (passing game) take over when they started packing the box,? said Wolf. ?It was a good effort by the offensive line. They blocked well all four quarters.?
Sandia (4-4) was coming off a handsome victory against Volcano Vista, but that momentum didn?t carry over.
?We just can?t get over that hump,? Barker said. ?It?s a mental block for us at Sandia, at least in football, when it comes to (La Cueva).?
Craig Coffman?s 34-yard field goal for Sandia started the scoring. Wolf had his 61-yard TD run on La Cueva?s next play, and he added a 7-yard TD run in the second. Walsh tossed 31 yards to wide open Griego just before halftime for a 21-7 lead.
Coffman punted into the back of one of his protectors to open the third quarter, setting up the Bears at the Matadors? 6. Walsh threw 2 yards to Wolf three plays later.
Carlsbad, Manzano and Las Cruces are the other 5A schools with a single loss. No. 1 Cleveland is the lone unbeaten 5A team.
