There were a lot of tears Thursday night as the interim principal at the Career Academic Technical Academy talked to students and parents about what's next for the charter school.
The Albuquerque Public SchoolBoard recently voted to revoke the school'slicense after anaudit showed CATA?s principal, Glee Hare, violated policy after she hired family members.
She is on leave.
The school is now set to close in June.
Some parents with kids at the school worry the school could close before June."And where is she going to go to school? Part way through the year they decide we're going to take her some place else,? parent Tonya Higdon said. ?I don't think anyone is thinking about the kids in this situation."
Interim principal Mark Tolley told the group of students and parents that teachers will continue to teach and those who have fulfilled graduation requirements will graduate.
"The seniors do take precedence because the clock's ticking,? Tolley said. ?We want to make sure you have all the credits to graduate. We have to try to help the seniors first."
Former charter school board memberDiane Stearlysaid the board was going to appeal the license revocation but decided not to afterprincipal Hare missed a recent renewal deadline, essentiallyclosing the school.
Right now it?s unknown if the school will re-open next year as a charter school, a magnet school or something else.
APS board members said they plan to meet with students and parents but a date has not been set.
The school?s attorney argued that certain APS nepotism rules were not in place at the time of the hires.
Still the audit shows those hires may have violated state law so the board decided to revoke its charter.
